Building, Buying, or Selling A Home

Whether you’re building, buying, selling a home, or need after-tenancy cleanups, Village Green can help you create or renovate your landscape.

Planning is key to achieving the results you are looking for. It is best to start at the beginning in conjunction with your architect and home builder. Our landscape designer has vast experience working with several of the most well respected and award winning architects and home builders in British Columbia. By working in conjunction with your architect and home builder we can establish a cohesive team which is not only very cost-effective but also will ensure a seamless design blending architecture with landscape design to give you the landscape of your dreams.

If you’ve just purchased a home we can help you create or renovate your new landscape. When many people first purchase a home they are not familiar with the plants in their landscape or may feel overwhelmed with the prospect of creating or renovating a new landscape. We can conduct an assessment and come up with a strategy to either renovate the existing landscape or design a new plan for a complete makeover that fits your needs.

Whether the real estate market is hot or cold, you always want to make a few extra dollars when selling your home. Most people focus on the inside of their home when it comes time to selling, but first impressions – even from the outside – are critical.

Refreshing the overall appearance of your outdoor space improves curb appeal and can help increase the resale value of your property if you’re considering selling.

An attractive landscape not only increases the curb appeal and the overall value of your home but it also conveys to potential buyer’s pride in home ownership. This positive first impression will engage potential buyers to want to see more.

Just as an attractive landscape can impress potential buyers, a poorly maintained landscape will give the impression that the home was not cared for and raises many questions and doubts about the condition of your home.

Based on our experience with preparing homes to go on the market we strongly recommend advanced planning to get your landscape ready. Depending on the level of work required and the condition of your existing landscape it may take weeks to months for your landscape to look its optimum. We can renovate your landscape through the addition, removal, or renovation of trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, ground covers, and lawn.

Gardening with the Future in Mind (Aging in Place)

If you have a mobility issue and need help maintaining your garden, we are here for you. We work with many lifetime gardeners whose garden maintenance has become too much due to health reasons. Streamlining your garden can reduce stress, simplify your life, free up time, and make it more manageable.

Gardening is an excellent physical, social, and mentally stimulating activity to delay aging, not to mention a very satisfying emotional boost. With some of the gardening challenges that we face as we age such as digging, bending, carrying, planting, and walking on uneven ground we can make your garden as much or little work as you desire.

Gardening is promoted as a physical work-out activity. A recent study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine tracked the behaviour and health of nearly 4,000 people 60 and older in Stockholm for about 12 1/2 years. They found that something called NEPA, or non-exercise physical activity, i.e. gardening, can cut the risk of a heart attack or stroke by more than a quarter among people 60 and older.

By being proactive and providing a motivating activity, we are finding increases in social interaction, nutrition, exercise, sensory stimulation, motivation, stress reduction, and sense of hope…a general happiness factor.

We realize that many older adults may have given up on a favourite pastime because of the physical challenge that gardening can present. But not being able to garden shouldn’t mean not being able to enjoy the garden you worked hard to create. We can step in to do the bending and shovelling for you, and can work with you to re-design a garden that is easier to manage yourself. This can allow you to continue to enjoy the garden you built.

Scented Gardens

By incorporating and strategically placing fragrant plants we can design a garden that not only has a positive effect on your mood and emotion but also your physiology. Research is increasingly showing certain plants such as Lavender and Roses are well recognized for their anti-anxiety effect which assists in relaxation.

Just the faintest smell in the air can transport you back to a forgotten moment in your past. Each fragrance, whether sweet or spicy, light or heavy, comes upon you in its own way and evokes its own emotional response. Smell is our strongest scent and it plays an important role in memory, mood, and emotion. Scented gardens are a great way to celebrate the smell of every season and relish the aromatic scents of spring, summer, fall, and winter. More than any other sense, smell seems capable of transporting us to other places and times.

Memories that are triggered by smells tend to be clearer, more intense, and more emotional. One theory is that this is because the part of the brain that processes smell has direct links with parts that are involved in emotion and memory.

Gardens, whether enjoyed in the morning, afternoon, or evening should be stimulating environments, both mentally and physically, and can be designed to provide a rich sensory experience. Sometimes all you need to do is close your eyes and wait for the other senses to wake up and provide an unexpected new application of the garden you never knew you had.

A fragrant garden also allows you to have a wide selection of plants that you can cut and bring indoors during the growing season to make you indoor areas smell as beautiful as your outdoor garden. Pollinators like honey bees and hummingbirds will frequent your garden more often, and you will want to spend much more time outside enjoying the fragrances.
